The Purchasing Agent is an independent position that seeks out alternate sources for products with an exceptional skill for negotiating the lowest possible price while keeping quality standards. This position will be relied upon by upper management to find competitive discounted prices for products. This position is responsible for managing supplier selection, assessments, negotiations, contract performance, supply base portfolio shaping, quality improvements, cost reductions and critical performance metrics JOB DUTIES: The Purchasing Agent position is responsible for the following duties including, but not limited to: • Negotiate purchases to ensure lowest cost consistent with standards for quality products. • Negotiate with freight companies. • Continually research alternate sources for products in order to ensure the most competitive pricing. • Stay up to date on overall market conditions, price trends, buying strategies and lead times. • Maintain knowledge of the local factory representatives and authorized distributors and build constructive relationships. • Maintain current published price list and discount schedules. • Keep accurate and organized records of all purchasing activities. • Responsible for raw material procurement, policies, procedures, and inventory control. • Assist with special projects and duties as assigned CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS: 1. Reduce freight costs and find early pay discounts. 2. Identify the best vendors to purchase from in order to decrease in merchandise cost while maintaining quality and timeliness of supplies. 3. The ability to make “value added" decisions in a timely manner at all levels of the organization. 4. Create and implement rules, regulations and processes for purchasing to the standards set by senior management. 5. Turn the purchasing function into a profit center by taking advantage of discounts via aggressive negotiation. REQUIREMENTS: • 5-7 years of prior purchasing and procurement experience with a strong background in manufacturing or a production environment. • Previous experience in Accounts Payable is strongly preferred. • Ability to maintain an active awareness of best practices within the disciplines of procurement and sourcing. • Sufficient knowledge of large scale purchasing methods, procedures, contracts, research methods, and techniques. • Experience working at a corporate level with senior executives. • Experience supporting multiple locations is strongly preferred. • Basic proficiency in Excel, Word, and Outlook. • EDI experience is preferred. • Must have a professional attitude and be a team player as well as have the ability to work independently. • Must be strongly organized, self-motivated and goal-oriented. • Proven job diligence, dedication, organization, and attention to detail. • Good communication, organization, interpersonal, and time management skills. • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to successfully communicate with the public, other employees, and vendors. • High School/GED required. • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
